About the Book

Description:

Undated but appears to be late 1950's. A near fine copy, in a very good dust jacket, of the first edition. The red cloth binding is clean and unworn, with strong black lettering to the spine. Everything is tight and square, with unbumped edges and corners. The contents are clean and bright, with no ownership inscriptions or other markings of any kind. The dust jacket is unclipped (no flap price), and is otherwise substantially complete with only light edgewear and two small triangular losses to the spine top. It has been neatly and invisibly reinforced from behind and is now protected in a removable mylar cover. From the blurb: "Set partly in South Africa and in India, this is a novel of a well-to-do Indian family, who participate in passive resistance and whose domestic affairs reveal the stresses and strains in character with Indian family life. This is the first novel by a South African Indian". Bookseller Inventory # NT000564

Book Description Central News Agency, South Africa / The Author, 1960. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. 204 pages (complete). Signed by Ansuyah Singh on the front pastedown (dated: 14.12.60). A most agreeable copy of this extraordinary novel. It is considered the first novel written by a South African Indian. The novel, set in the 1940s partly in South Africa and in India, tells the story of a Durban man, Srenika Nirvani, whose family is part of the indentured labour system and was political active. He travels to Bombay to marry an Indian woman from Bombay, Yagesvari Jivan-Sinha. The narratives reveal the complexity of relations not only within a family but with friends, native black Africans and how the dynamics of the self consciousness and the social, economic and political were and are mixed up the country's racial policies and prejudices. The dustjacket has a clear cellophane protective cover. The dj has some mild wear about the edges and seams and corners. It has light rubbing and scuffing. It is serene and sure. The red boards are smart and healthy. The contents are agreeably hale, clean, clear, comfortable, keen. fk. Signed. Seller Inventory # 14kq
