About this title

Synopsis:

Documents 1995 UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. Forty three essays by men and women who attended the conference tell of their experiences and how they’ve applied what they learned at home.

The words of these college presidents, students, teachers, homemakers, retirees, writers, clergy, and entrepreneurs who participated in the UN Fourth World Conference on Women document the remarkable initiative, energy, and vision of those who began and continue to coordinate the activities of Pittsburgh/Beijing ’95 and Beyond. Auth also offers background information on the three previous UN Women’s Conferences, outlines the work that has been accomplished since the 1995 conference, and the plans for implementing the Beijing Platform for Action at the local level. Her remarks and the stories she has collected offer an intimate portrayal of an historical event that was largely under-reported by popular media. Essential reading for anyone who wants to know what really happened and what they can do now.

Review:

The United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women, which took place in Beijing, China, in 1995, was the "largest gathering of women anywhere, ever," and yet it was an event that went sorely underreported by the international media. To Beijing and Beyond highlights the significance of the conference by gathering the stories of more than 40 women who traveled to Beijing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. "The goal," as described in the book, "was to move from local needs (Pittsburgh) to global needs (Beijing '95) and then to implement the recommendations of the platform here in our home communities--and beyond."

In short essays, letters, journal entries, and the occasional poem, Pittsburgh women describe their experiences at the conference. Particularly stirring are stories of making contact with women from developing countries, who remain optimistic even while living with poverty, war, and oppression. One participant observed an African woman wearing bright yellow at a demonstration called "Women in Black," organized as a protest against violence. "I decided not to wear black," the woman told her, "because I am black and I wanted to wear a dress to show that the sun will rise. There is hope not matter how subjugated or hopeless we feel."

A final section of the book describes the return from China, as conference-goers worked with various community, political, and educational organizations to fulfill the objectives of the Beijing conference. These stories will inspire and guide readers interested in working for local and global change. --Maria Dolan
