About this Item

Quarto, wrappers, 74pp. Constructivist cover design by Holostenko. The only monograph on Uitz to appear in his lifetime by his colleague János Mácza (aka Ivan Matsa, a fellow emigre to the USSR who became an influential architectural theorist and historian). Béla Uitz (1887-1972) was possibly the most formidable talent of the Hungarian Activist artists, initially collaborating with Kassák with the journal Ma, and breaking with him in Vienna exile where Uitz founded another group, Ék. Uitz emigrated to the Soviet Union in 1927 and returned to Hungary in 1970. His work is very important and yet still remains in obscurity outside of his native country, primarily due to his emigration and career as a Socialist Realist painter in the USSR. Remarkably, his free style was relatively tolerated by Soviet authorities, and he spent most of his time in Kharkov, Kirghizstan and other remote outposts, which may have have some bearing on that. This monograph features numerous reproductions of work, in some cases the only record, and is a prized rarity. Includes texts by Korichener, Macza and Kashen, statements by the artist. Condition very good; front cover has corner chip, not effecting image. Bookseller Inventory # 646
