About this Item

Postally used post card. The postage stamp has been removed. the post office stamp indicates it was mailed from Berehovo on November 16, 1932 to Mr. Jan Leman in Prague. Beregovo is a city in the Sub-Carpathian Ruthenia region and is now part of the Ukraine. Prior to 1918, the town was part of Hungary and known as Beregszasz. Between 1918 and 1938, the town was part of Czechoslovakia. Between 1938 and the end of World War II, the town was once again part of Hungary. The Jewish population in 1930 was about 5,700. After the Hungarians regained control in 1938, most of the Jewish males were sent to Hungarian labor battalions. The synagogue depicted in the postcard was confiscated in 1959 for use as a theater.
