About this Item

Original brownish-orange cloth covers with gilt lettering on the front and spine. The upper front cover is sun-struck (faded), corners are lightly bumped, and both hinges show signs of weakness. There are only pieces of the dust jacket remaining. This is one of the copies with a special, new, half-title page added in 1936 on the occasion of the Olympic Games. Here is a translation of that half-title: "To the Guests of the Capital City of the Reich as a Remembrance of the XI Olympic Games, Berlin, 1936." There is nothing more about the Olympics printed in the volume itself. However, this copy does have some possible Olympic connections written on the front paste down and fly leaf. The apparent first owner of the book wrote his name followed by "Berlin, Germany. XI Olympade [sic] 7/24/36 Sports Students Congress. Presented at City Hall after reception." This inscription is followed by the signatures of 24 other (presumably American) men along with the name of their collegiate or university affiliation. These two dozen men represented 10 different Universities, 7 different Colleges, the Rice Institute and one New York High School. Although we can't decipher exactly all the personal names, the names of institutions listed are legible. This listing records the names of some of the people attending the Sports Students Congress in much the same way one would have a yearbook signed by classmates. Bookseller Inventory # 001524
