About this title

Synopsis:

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, unified Germany’s new capital city has experienced an extraordinary renaissance and a triumphant return to the ranks of Europe’s tastemaking cities. “New Berlin” has not only attracted contemporary artists formerly based in the regions of Cologne, Hamburg, and Dusseldorf, but many internationally renowned artists as well.

Berlin Art Now explores the mindsets, mentalities, and working practices of twenty-three painters and sculptors whose work is now shaping Berlin’s burgeoning art scene. The city itself plays an integral role in each artist’s style, distinguishing Berlin’s resident artist culture from those of other Western European cities. With text by Mark Gisbourne of the Courtauld Institute in London and photographs of both the artists and the city by noted portraitist Jim Rakete, Berlin Art Now poses (and answers) the question, Why Berlin, and why now?

About the Author:

Marc Gisbourne, art historian, curator and critic, has taught at the Courtauld Institute of Art, Slade School of Fine Art, and many other prestigious institutions. He lives and works in Berlin.

Jim Rakete is one of Germany’s most prolific portrait photographers. Apart from his portraits of international celebrities, he works in advertising for such brands as Toni Gard, Loewe, Nil, and Jacques Brit. He lives in Berlin.

Store Description

The Studio Bibliografico Marini was founded in 1993. It deals mainly in rare and out-of print books, first editions of Italian and foreign literature, artist's books, original works of art, graphic art, volumes with etchings, illustrated books, private press printings and books on the history of all these fields. In our search web page an engine allows visitors to browse our database of 40,000 books on contemporary art and literature, from original texts and documents to exhibition catalogues, catalogues raisonné, essays, monographs and reference volumes. It also provides access to those volumes not usually listed in our paper catalogues and online lists. These include works on philosophy, cinema, history, politics, philosophy, religion, literary criticism, geography, applied arts, architecture & design, ancient art, etc. The website is divided into three areas: the Bookshop, the Art Gallery and the Press. The Bookshop publishes three hardcopy catalogues per year, sent free to our customers, bibliophiles, experts and anyone who wishes to receive them. Lists on specific subjects and supplements are issued periodically. Many of them can be downloaded directly from the website. The Art Gallery presents a permanent exhibition of original etchings and lithographs by 20th century Italian and international artists. A selection of 500 items from our collection is currently available on line and updated monthly. Specific exhibitions are devoted to artists of the last century and to their original works of art on paper (watercolours, drawings, acrylics, etc.)
