About this Item

DRAYTON, John. Folding table, folding map. Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked with period-style gilt-ruled spine, red morocco spine label. Internally very clean, untrimmed copy. HOWES D-492. Sabin 20915. Turnbull I, p. 439. A translation of John Drayton's View of South Carolina (Charleston, 1802). Drayton became governor of South Carolina in January, 1800, and served until December, 1802. This book was composed and written during that period, when he travelled extensively throughout the state, including the more remote reaches of the upper country. His wide-ranging interests and position led him to accumulate materials on practically every aspect of life in South Carolina at the time, including natural history, Indians, minerals; rice, tobacco, and corn raising; inland navigation, commerce and manufactures, and various social and charitable activities. "A valuable descriptive work which was probably inspired by Jefferson's 'Notes on Virginia'" (DAB). Bookseller Inventory # 71968
