Wells, Rudyard Kipling, Edith Wharton, Oscar Wilde, Henry James, Wilkie Collins, Guy de Maupassant and more. From the Prefatory Note: "The past hundred years or so have been too rich in ghost stories for a collection of this size to claim comprehensiveness. But the aim which largely governed my choice, was to make the collection readable as a whole; I have therefore tried to get variety of type: I have included some light relief, and I have chosen stories of subtlety and strangeness as well as stories of terror." Softcover with 360 pages. The book measures 7 1/4" tall x 5" wide. Condition: Light soiling to the covers. Small bits of paper have peeled away at the left edge of the front cover. Mild crease at the top-right corner of the front cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the text pages are clean with only a small, light smudge at the top of page 340. The lower-outer corner of page 289 has torn away (the text is unaffected). The half title page has the word "duck" stamped in red ink, and (presumably) the provenance of where the book was purchased written in pencil. Overall the book is in Good condition.
