Book Description Congregation Beth Sholom, Elkins Park, PA, 1959. Condition: very good. First? Edition. First? Printing. 34, illus. (some color) The Beth Sholom Congregation was organized in Philadelphia in 1917. In commemoration of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918, it adopted as its name Beth Sholom, which means "House of Peace". The Synagogue building highlighted in this publication was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Architectural Forun, June, 1959, selected the Beth Sholom building as representative of Mr. Wright's creative work in his seventh decade as an architect. Mr. Wright was quoted as saying that he used the idea of the synagogue building as a travelling Mount Sinai, a mountain of light. The new synagogue building was dedicated on September 20th, 1959, several months after Mr. Wright had died. Thus Beth Sholom stands as the last great builidng that this immortal genius completed.
