Synopsis: Victor Waldran, director of the Garman Institute in Manhattan concentrating on AIDS research, is kidnapped along with his daughter. His wife, Kate, a distinguished scientist co-worker, is told by the kidnappers that her husband and daughter will be returned for a ransom of Waldran's vials of a rare and aggressively mutating strain of HIV he has obtained from Zambia. Kate delivers the ransom although she is terrified by the connotations of releasing the deadly virus into the hands of criminals.
Warned by the kidnappers to stay away from the police, Kate wins the assistance of an ex-policeman, ex-marine friend, "Mac" McGinter, and a Mexican private detective, Rico Silva, who lives in East Harlem. McGinter has acquired the habit of grim fidelity from his military experience. Rico Silva, fighting his way up from the streets, longs for recognition that he is just as smart as the gringos.
As they struggle to find and save Kate's family and prevent a national catastrophe, Kate and her friends clash with brutal killers, a crooked cop, a survivalist group determined to destroy the "evil" people of America, and a hydra-headed criminal organization.
Kate's indomitable courage and love for her family drive her to the highest levels of violence when she finds herself fighting ruthless enemies intent on ending her search with death.
