About the Author:

GLENN ROSS JOHNSON is a Professor Emeritus who served in various positions at Texas A&M University, where he worked for 30 years. Earlier in his career, he served as a teacher, reading consultant, assistant principal, and principal in public schools in Euclid, Ohio, and Clayton, Missouri. He has a BS in Education from Kent State University, an MA in Education from Ohio State University, and an EdD from Columbia University Teachers College. Johnson s more than 50 publications have focused primarily on instructional strategies, including First Steps to Excellence in College Teaching. After serving as Professor and Head of the Department of Educational Curriculum and Instruction, Johnson, at the request of the President and Vice President of Texas A&M University, established and directed The Center for Teaching Excellence. The Center provided publications, seminars, workshops, and services to faculty members and teaching assistants. While at Texas A&M University, Johnson developed a College Teaching Program that enabled adults holding bachelor s degrees and master s degrees in such fields as English, mathematics, physics, biology, business, and allied health to pursue a PhD in Educational Curriculum and Instruction. The program offered courses dealing with college teaching and curriculum, student personnel services, issues in higher education, and administration. Almost all of the students completing the program pursued dissertation research involving teaching in their subject area. Some of the graduates became college and university department chairs, associate deans, deans, and presidents. ROBERT MAGNAN began writing and editing books in higher education after teaching for 13 years at three universities. He holds a BA in English and an MA in French from Michigan State University and a PhD in French from Indiana University. Bob was Managing Editor of "The Teaching Professor"; newsletter for seven years. He is the author of 147 Tips for Teaching Professors (published also in Spanish and French) and 147 Practical Tips for Using Icebreakers with College Students and the co-author of Mentor in a Manual: Climbing the Academic Ladder to Tenure (with A. Clay Schoenfeld). He has also edited some two dozen books in higher education, including First Steps to Excellence in College Teaching (Glenn Ross Johnson) and, most recently, 147 Practical Tips for Teaching Diversity (William M. Timpson, Raymond Yang, Evelinn A. Borrayo, and Silvia Sara Canetto) and Approaches to Communication: Trends in Global Communication Studies (Susan Petrilli, editor). Beyond higher education, Bob has written eight books and 10 condensed versions of books, edited more than 150 books, and translated and edited Ordinary Hero (Le héros ordinaire) by Yves Bertrand. He currently works as a freelance editor and author.
