, 514, 15, leaves (blank leaf after 514 [SSS10] removed, as issued). Small folio. Decorated initials at the start of each chapter. A re-issue of the second edition of Chiari's revised Vulgate (first published in 1541, then 1557). Chiari, and Italian priest and member of the Council of Trent, edited the Vulgate Bible, offering commentary and changes based on Greek and Hebrew manuscripts. In the first edition, he supplied an introduction that drew on Protestant scholarship, and for that, the first edition was suppressed even though the Catholic Church approved of his biblical text. This version is mentioned in the preface to the 1611 King James Version of the Bible, 'That more of their chiefe men of all sorts . their own Bishop Isidorus Clarius . doe either make new Translations themselves.' A very attractive edition of the Vulgate, bound in coarse parchment and sewn with leather cords. Preliminary and final leaves professionally remargined, not affecting any text. A few old ink notations, else a very clean copy. Bookseller Inventory #
