About this Item

Sm. folio. 199pp. Tan cloth with gold lettering on cover and spine in original dust jacket protected by mylar. "Marc Chagall has always been fascinated by biblical themes and characters, and over the years he has produced a tremendous variety of art work based on both Old Testament and New Testament subjects. Among the most remarkable of these works is a series of large oil paintings and 38 gouaches on Old Testament themes known as The Biblical Message. In these paintings Chagall makes the Bible contemporary by conveying the emotional, psychological, and philosophical essence of the biblical stories being told. This volume provides a comprehensive view of these paintings and the several sculptures, stained-glass windows, a ceramic, a tapestry, and a drawing that the Chagalls donated to the French government for a new museum and cultural center in Nice." Frontispiece original color lithograph by Chagall, all other plates reproduced in stunning colors & b/w. Signature of previous owner in pencil on free front endpaper, "1973" in black pen below signature. Minor rubbing, chipping and creasing on dj. Three-inch closed tear on mylar at rear, creased at some area. Dj in good, book in fine to near fine condition. Bookseller Inventory # 21710
