About this Item

London: Printed for the Author by C. Richards, 1838. Two volumes, tall octavos, handsomely bound in full 19th-century calf, gilt French-fillet border on each cover, skillfully re-backed (with hinges reinforced and text block most likely re-sewn) in matching leather, ornately tooled on the spine with gilt fleurons and arabesques, and original marbled endleaves to match the marbled edges of each text block. Pp.xv (+ i blank), 5 ff, 436; 3 ff., (437)-1090, wood-engraved vignettes on titles and throughout the text, plus 42 full-page plates. Inner hinges tight, possibly from re-sewing. Most of the full-page plates are lightly to moderately foxed, due to poor paper, but internal contents are otherwise very clean and bright. Corners worn, and some scuffing to edges, but for the most part a bright set in very good to fine condition. First Edition. Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776-1847) was an English bibliophile, bibliographer, and librarian to Lord Spencer, whose library at Althorp he helped build into one of the finest collections of its time. Although credited with arousing widespread interest in libraries and book collecting in the early nineteenth century, he is described by William A. Jackson, the noted Harvard Librarian, as "the most exasperating of bibliographers - hardly a statement that he makes can be accepted without checking." In this work he travels to famous libraries both public and private, describing their buildings, libraries, and rare books. Includes visits to Peterborough Cathedral, Lincoln Cathedral, York Cathedral, Durham, Newcastle, etc. Bookseller Inventory # 7681
