About this title

Synopsis:

A fourth Big Bear collection offers an all-new gathering of wonderful poetry, stories, extracts, and pictures from such writers and artists as John Burningham, Helen Oxenbury, Martin Handford, Shirley Hughes, Martin Waddell, Lucy Cousins, and many others.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 4-A feast for the eye and ear. Over 30 selections from award-winning authors accommodate a broad variety of tastes, from toddlers into the early elementary grades. This is a book not only for many ages, but also for many moods as well. Sweet selections such as "The Shepherd Boy" by Kim Lewis or "Oh, Little Jack" by Inga Moore are balanced by the more offbeat "Hob and the Temper" by William Mayne and "Daedalus and Icarus" by Marcia Williams. Quieter bedtime stories, such as "The Park in the Dark" by Martin Waddell, are joined by high-energy funny-bone ticklers such as "The Fibbs" by Chris Riddell and "The Most Obedient Dog in the World" by Anita Jeram. Also, there is a rich blend of classic stories and poems ("The Best of Aesop's Fables" by Margaret Clark, "Noah's Ark" by Lucy Cousins, and "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," surreally illustrated by Anthony Browne) with fresh and original material. This volume does seem to concentrate a bit more on the younger set, but there is still plenty to whet the appetites of older readers. An introductory note encourages a "treasure hunt" for additional works by the authors they enjoy, and this motivation to find out more is fed with enticing excerpts from stories such as Crumbling Castle by Sarah Hayes. Of course, "Where's Waldo in the Land of Waldos?" by Martin Handford will have older kids grabbing Big Bear's Treasury from their preschool siblings. The variety of illustrative styles and page layouts makes this another volume that begs to be browsed through. It's a perfect book for parents to reach for when they need more than five minutes of entertainment-at the laundromat, on a long trip, or when it's not a good day to carry 30 picture books home from the library! Like its companions, Big Bear's Treasury, Volume 4 is a goldmine.
