About this Item
The Big Ship: An Autobiography by Henry A. Larsen, in Co-operation with Frank R. Sheer and Edvard Omholt-Jensen; McClelland and Stewart Limited, Toronto, 1967. From the blurb Here is a vivid account of Henry A. Larsen s life as a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman on Arctic patrol service. It is thrilling and true story of the unfamiliar north, a story that conveys the indomitable courage and strength necessary to persevere in extreme adversity. The mission of the St. Roch in 1940 to go from the Pacific to the Atlantic by way of the Arctic, and its return voyage in 1944, ranks as one of the principal seaborne expeditions of polar exploration. The reader rides with Larsen on the famous vessel the last of the wooden ships all of which were seriously restricted by prevailing ice conditions, and whose progress depended entirely on the skill of their crews to take advantage of every favourable wind and tide. The result is an exciting, personal story of the first ship to complete the Northwest Passage from the West to the East, and the only one to have traversed the continent in both directions. The St. Roch has now become a national historic monument, and was unveiled in Vancouver in 1965. The book has a number of black & white photographs. A map of its voyages is on the back side of the dust jacket. This book, 223 pages is in near-fine condition as is the dust jacket that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. A very nice copy of a scarce book. Seller Inventory # 21114a
