About this Item

presumably a revised edition of the 1968 two-volume research report published by the U. S. Department of Health, Education. and Welfare; this is volume 7 of the Indiana Language Science Monographs, edited by C. F. Voegelin; signed and inscribed by Fishman on the ffep "I am really happy to have finally met you and gotten to know you Joshua A. Fishman"; from the library of the linguist Glenn Gilbert with his inscription on the ffep, some shelfwear, bookseller's price sticker on the front cover, back cover beginning to yellow and fox, else tight, clean, and unread, rated VG+; this seminal work, describing the linguistic assimilation of Puerto Ricans in New York City, marked the beginning of a very fruitful interchange of ideas between Fishman and Charles Ferguson at Stanford, a long step forward for the non-Labovian Fishman-promoted "sociology of language"; Robert Cooper later emigrated to Israel and became a (the) leading sociolinguist there, especially in the area of language planning; I had the privilege of working with Fishman at Yeshiva University in NYC in the summer of 1982, the occasion of his inscription in this book; soft covers are red, black, and white with black and white lettering; 8vo - 9 inches tall, v + 696 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
