About this title

Book by Smith, Roger Guenveur

From Booklist:

This is the science biography set school librarians have been waiting for. Rather than approaching subjects from a strictly scientific perspective, the authors have tried to emphasize both the humanity and the diversity of honored researchers, and the symbiotic relationship between science and social well-being. The nearly 500 scientists and "science-dependent inventors" were chosen because they were pioneers, recipients of awards, and otherwise influential. They are physicists, chemists, mathematicians, astronomers, geologists, and biologists, ranging from Thales of Miletus, the founder of Greek science, born c. 625 BCE, to Vietnamese-born Harvard astronomer Jane X. Luu, born in 1963.

The entries are in alphabetical order and are generally 750 or 1,250 words long. Each begins with a chronology of significant events in the biographee's life and career, and includes a brief statement regarding area of achievement and contributions. Most entries have a portrait. The first few paragraphs of each essay cover early life and significant influences, followed by sections on education, career, and later life. Triumphs, problems, professional partnerships and feuds, and family life are described. Sidebars give details of the most important scientific discoveries, theories, and/or inventions. For example, the entry on Charles Darwin has a sidebar on natural selection, and the entry on Stephen Hawking has sidebars on cosmology and black holes. Bibliographies of the person's major works and works about the person end each entry; each sidebar has a bibliography as well. All entries are signed. High-quality diagrams and charts are included liberally.

The pages are numbered consecutively and the page numbers for each volume are clearly printed on the spine (well above where a spine label is usually placed, a nice design detail). There is an index for the full set in the back of each volume, with main entries in bold type. Pronunciations for names are given in context and there is a pronunciation guide at the front of each volume. A glossary, a time line of biographees, and three indexes are provided in the last volume. In addition to a general index, there are indexes that group scientists by nationality and by area of scientific achievement. In the nationality index, the U.S. is divided by ethnic groups: African American, Asian American, and Latino. The nationality index also includes a list of the 50 women who are covered in the set.

This encyclopedia covers far fewer people than The Grolier Library of Science Biographies [RBB Je 1 & 15 97], which briefly summarizes the professional careers of 2,000 scientists, leaving out the personal details. The amount and kind of information given in the Marshall Cavendish set is more in line with most schools' science research requirements. In addition, though the reading level is generally within the ability of most junior-high-school students, the Marshall Cavendish set provides formulas and other technical information, and includes primary-source material in its bibliographies, making it useful for higher-level students as well. School and public libraries should consider having both because they complement each other. If only one can be acquired, make it this one.
