Quarterbound leather with red and brown marbelized paper that is heavily scuffed. Somewhat faded gilt titles on spine with five rolls. Edge and corner wear. Still the book is square and the binding secure. One former owner's return address sticker on front pastedown. Another owner's name and address on back of second front free endpaper. Interior has some foxing or toning, especially on prints. This is a solid copy of a relatively uncommon title. Book consists of 16 biographical sketches, each by a different author, of early Southern, Methodist Circuit Riders, beginning with the famous Francis Asbury, who is featured on the Frontispiece. Besides Asbury, those included are: William McKendree, William Capers, Robert Kennon, William Kennedy, Hezekiah Leigh, Henry Bascom, Valentine Cook, Thomas Douglass, John Lane, Richmond Nolley, John Slade, Ezra Thornton, Ignatius Few, Martin Ruter and William W. Redman. All nine of the portrait engraving prints are present (collated with the copy from Columbia University, online through Hathi Trust. ) Exceptional source of information on early Methodists in the Southeast.
