About this Item

This is a presentation copy from William Brewster to Col. John E. Thayer. A two page manuscript letter from Mr. Brewster to Mr. Thayer in 1911 is mounted on the frontpaper. This book is in the original wraps and then bound into three-quarter red leather with faded marbled boards. The upper hinges are cracked for about 3 inches. Interior is fine. My computer cannot do scans, so here is the approximate contents of the letter, with some handwriting hard to read: "Jan. 16, 1911 / Dear Mr. Thayer: - I congratulate your ? / on being there ? ? / What a pity you were a deacon / on the way home from church / instead of some ? ? . / armed with a gun & indifferent / to Sunday scruples & usages. / I hope you will find the / birds there again to day but / our ? are against it. / I hear of them in a number / of places. Only yesterday a / letter came from Canaan, Conn., / (very ? ? ? ?) letting / ? ? ? flock that had / approved in ? ? . / The / Sparrow note / belongs to a clan difficult to / deal with & ? ? ? / ? Personally I do / not believe in accepting such / words ? ? ? ? / made by accredited ? / who know their birds through / previous ? ? ? / ? This particular worms / name is not familiar to me. / Mrs. Brewster & I are sorry / not to ? ? to go to ? ? / with you & Mrs. Thayer on / Thursday. It was most kind / of Mrs. Thayer to ask / us. Yours Sincerely William Brewster. Lots of Robins here / about two weeks ago. / I found fifty in our / garden. Two Thousand / were down by G? D? / ? Cambridge / Cemetery". Bookseller Inventory # 5085
