Hard Cover. Good/Not Issued in Dustjacket. First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 671 pages. The scarce Author's Edition, limited to 1000 sold by subscription only, and signed by the author on the page announcing the edition's name and limitation, following the half-title. Illustrated by 80 plates in color photography, and more than 200 original half-tones, showing the favorite haunts of the birds, flocking, feeding, nesting, etc., from photographs taken by the author and others. The books are fully bound in black leather with gilt lettering on the fronts and the spines. Despite the wear to the exteriors, the books are extremely clean, and both stand perfectly straight. The textblocks remaind intact; Volume II is very firm and tight in its binding, while Volume I has some pages loosened though all remain attached. There are no pages missing from either book. The hinges in Volume II are very sound and appear undamaged, while the hinges in Volume I are well-started, though the boards are still well-attached. All the corner points, though worn, are unbumped. The pages are lightly age-toned, as usual, but they are clean and clear, and all text and illustrations are bright, sharp and very legible. There is a previous owner's name on the front free endpaper of each volume, but no other writing, underlining, highlighting or markings of any kind in the book. NOT an ex-library copy. The exterior spines are somewhat of a problem: The top half-inch of leather on the spine of Volume II is missing, and the top of the spine on Volume I is chipped and torn and there is a tear at the spine edge and front hinge that runs from the top edge down about two-and-a-half inches along the hinge. There is another small piece of leather missing near the bottom of the spine on Volume I. The leather on both volumes is moderately scuffed at the extremeties and worn through at the corner tips, but the greatest portion of the leather bindings remain present on both volumes. Despite the flaws, still a complete, relatively sound copy of these scarce books, in a hard-to-find, signed, limited edition. Bookseller Inventory #
