From the Introductory Note: "The Birds was produced at the feast of the Great Dionysia of 414 BC, and although it is certainly the most fanciful and one of the most lyrical of Aristophanes' plays, it won only the second prize". "The Birds is not a play of escape; it is too honestly aware of its time for that; but it is primarily an entertainment, and as such, I think, it should be read and weighed".
