The Birth of the National Park Service: The Founding Years, 1913-33 (Institute of the American West books). Bookseller Inventory #
Synopsis: Book by Albright, Horace M.
From Library Journal:
This is an oral history related by a lawyer involved in founding the National Park Service, and skillfully arranged by a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. Albright's nearly two decades of public service between the Wilson and Roosevelt administrations fall into three parts: assistant to the first director, Stephen Mather; superintendent of Yellowstone Park; and, from 1929 to 1933, Mather's successor as director. Even in his years as Yellowstone's superintendent, Albright spent much of his time lobbying Congressmen for appropriations; thus his story is valuable as an insider's account of Washington politics before the New Deal. Albright also gives us the details of John D. Rockefeller Jr.'s extensive activities on behalf of national parks. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.
