About this title

Examines the causes, effects, and legacy of the epidemic that killed millions of people in Europe during the fourteenth century.

From School Library Journal:

Gr 5-8--Useful information presented in a textbook format covers two pivotal eras in European history. Both volumes feature numerous black-and-white illustrations, including maps and reproductions, as well as boxed highlights. The Black Death charts the spread of the bubonic plague from Asia through Europe and the momentous changes that resulted from such fast and overwhelming death rates, including the breakdown of feudalism, attitudes toward religious observances, and differences in farming. Lack of sanitation, overcrowding, and increases in trade are pointed out as contributing factors to the epidemic. In Age of Augustus, the rise of Augustus Caesar and his many accomplishments are detailed with an emphasis on important people and the consolidation of power in Rome. One chapter is devoted to the writings of Virgil, Horace, and Livy. Students will find answers to homework questions in these clearly written volumes.
