Brick-red cloth with black titles. Book is square and securely bound. It has light edge and corner wear along with some mild internal toning, mostly on endpapers. Jacket has some edge and corner wear along with a bit of loss at top of spine. Solid and attractive copy. This is the true first edition, not to be confused with a fairly common book club edition. The book is a collection of essays by famous African Americans. Some are historical like Frederick Douglass and W. E. B.
