About this Item

This is a signed hardback copy of the History Book Club Edition, which includes a map and numerous small corrections. No jacket came with this edition, the painting of William Wells at the Treaty of Greenville is on the cover. This splendid novel about an unsung hero of American history is the product of twelve years of research and writing, yet it carries its prodigious learning lightly in order to tell vividly the story of William Wells's remarkable life. Blacksnake's Path recreates an entire period (1779-1812), showing how the Miami Indians lived, fought for their homeland, and dealt with defeat. Captured in 1784 and re-named Blacksnake, Wells fought for Little Turtle at St. Clair's Defeat in 1791 (the biggest victory the Indians ever won against the U. S. Army, then he switched sides and served as head scout for General Anthony Wayne at the battle of Fallen Timbers. Later he became Indian Agent for the Miami at Fort Wayne. He died at the Fort Dearborn Massacre in 1812. "Heath ably combines the craft of the novelist with the deep research of the historain to make Blacksnake's Path as informative as it is enjoyable," Andrew Cayton. ".perhaps the best book that describes the earliest, wild and bloody days of the American Midwest," Jerry Crimmins. "As scenic and action-packed as the best adventure novel, Blacksnake's Path is a rousing, brutal use of American history," Stewart O'Nan. A hardback copy of this book is vey rare. The cover photo shows Wells at the Treaty of Greenville, standing between Little Turtle and Anthony Wayne. The hardback was not published with a jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 000273
