About this Item

An attractive Hardcover Copy in the Original Cloth Publisher's Binding; this edition with the 1853 title page, 8 plates pasted into the text, prepared for binding in paper wrappers, with stab holes present. This edition is similar to that described by Gimbel, page 133, Listing A134 [ this copy is bound in cloth, not paper wrappers, and lacks the printer's imprint on the back of the title page]. The illustrations are taken from the Harpers edition. This copy is bound in Green Morocco Grain Cloth, blind stamped front & rear, with Gilt Titling on the spine, which is still clear & legible. Other than minor wear, the cloth is very decent; just a modicum of wear at the corners. The plates are still mostly white, while the text has toned, much like other Getz & Buck titles, but the printing is quite crisp. Endpapers are not split, some tanning, front with interesting booksellers' notes; rear with pen sigs. of previous owner. The 8 plates, apparently randomly inserted in this copy, occur as follows, also noted are the original Harpers part & page #'s in brackets [ . . . ]; The Frontispiece, Mrs. Bagnet Returns From Her Expedition [ Part 17, Plate 33 ]; Facing pg. 24, The Ghosts Walk [ Part 12, Plate 22 ]; Facing pg. 32 The Morning [ Part 18, Plate 35 ]; Facing pg. 56, Mr. Smallweed Breaks The Pipe Of Peace [ Part 11, Plate 21]; Facing pg. 64, A New Meaning In The Roman [ Part 15, Plate 29 ]; Facing pg. 88, Sir Leicester Dedlock [ Part 14 Plate 26]; Facing pg. 112, Friendly Behavior Of Mr. Bucket [ Part 15, Plate 28 ]; Facing pg. 153, The Appointed Time [ Part 10, plate 19]. Arguably, this edition was published quickly & cheaply, and could have appeared for sale to the public before or simultaneously with Harpers first complete edition in wrappers. This copy has all the earmarks of a Publishers' Remainder Binding, and likely bound up to provide a single volume trade hardcover as quickly as possible [ perhaps Harper was less hasty, having to put out a two volume set ]. Copies of this G&B title appear now and then in the market place, but we have yet to locate a copy in the publishers' original cloth casing. Getz & Buck published Dickens works using Lea & Blanchard printing plates, which they purchased from L&B in 1851; this title appears to be the only Dickens title printed from plates which Getz & Buck originated the typesetting. TB Peterson got into the action, too, purchasing Getz & Buck plates for their issues of this title. 313 pages: 6" [15cm] by 9.3" [23.5cm]. Ref: Gimbel; Smith Vol. 3 Page 318.
