About this title

This volume presents twenty-five of the most recent works by Shilpa Gupta (born in 1976 in Mumbai). Gupta creates works that fuse interactive media with traditional sculptural and photographic elements. Performance plays a major role here, demonstrating the artist?s ability to contextualize difficult contemporary subjects and subjectivities, including the importance of personal space, the abrupt changes in our need for security, or the very personal experience of "otherness."

Shilpa Gupta is one of India?s leading visual artists. Her work has been shown in Tate Modern, London; the Queens Museum and the New Museum, New York; and the Chicago Cultural Center, among many others.

About the Author:

Shilpa Gupta (b.1976) creates artwork using interactive video, websites, photographs, objects, sound and public performances to probe and examine subversively such themes as desire, religion, notions of security on the street and on the imagined border. Shaheen Merali is an artist, curator, researcher, writer, observer and globetrotter, who absorbs the cultural and social peculiarities of everywhere he visits. His art work has been widely exhibited and he has curated over twenty international exhibitions. Merali holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. He is currently Head of Exhibitions of the House of World Cultures in Berlin. Hans Ulrich Obrist (Zurich, Switzerland, 1968) is a Swiss curator and art critic. In 1993, he founded the Museum Robert Walser and was curator for contemporary art at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. He presently serves as the Co-Director, Exhibitions and Director of International Projects at the Serpentine Gallery, Kensington Gardens, London. Julia Peyton-Jones OBE was appointed Director of the Serpentine Gallery in 1991. She oversaw a major refurbishment of the galleries, and is widely credited with it success over the last 20 years. Nancy Adajania (born Bombay, 15 December 1971) is a cultural theorist, art critic and independent curator based in India.
