This is the first volume of Churchill's famous war speeches. Of Churchill, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." In this volume the great battle of the Twentieth Century and Churchill's life begins. Published in England as "Into Battle", this is one of the few Churchill first editions for which the U.S. edition bears a different title than the British. Here is the first U.S. edition, first printing, about very good in a correct first printing dust jacket. Collectors please note that this is the true first edition, not the similar Book of the Month Club edition so commonly mistaken for the first edition. The blue cloth binding is clean, tight, and square with lightly bumped lower corners and a bit of waviness to the cloth at the lower rear corner. The contents are clean apart from some staining to the rear endpaper. A single inked inscription on the ffep is dated "Christmas 1941". The red-stained top edge retains respectable red color with light dust soiling. The untrimmed fore edge is clean and the bottom edge lightly soiled. The correct first printing dust jacket is unclipped, still bearing the $3.00 price on the front flap. There is modest chipping at the extremities. The spine is lightly toned with chipping at the ends to a maximum 1/8 inch depth and abrasion to the lower spine with a 1/8 inch hole near the rear hinge. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A142.3, Woods/ICS A66(b.1), Langworth p.207. Bookseller Inventory #
