About this title

Synopsis:

Catherine Calk McCarty was one of four women in the 18th Legislative Session, Montana State Legislature. Their picture was carried nationally, on March 3, 1923, with the observation: "None was given to the espousal of freak legislation and all performed the routine tasks." If Catharine Calk McCarty ever espoused freak ideas, it was only because she lived ideas fifty years before their time. Spanning the years 1915 to 1939, Mrs. McCarty's narrative provides an unusual insight to what was happening in the western United States during a time of profound change. Mrs. McCarty's perceptions of the great depression and the underlying reasons for the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt, as President of the United States, are both historically accurate and full of human feeling. Written from a very personal viewpoint, the anecdotes are colorful and sensitive.
