Description:

Quarto. (5)ff., + 9 pop-up spreads consisting of a french-folded two-page quire. First edition. One of 125 copies, this one out-of-series and likely an artist's proof copy. Illustrated with nine silkscreened structures by Ronald King, together with text by Roy Fisher. This book marks the first collaboration between King and Fisher, and it is also the first pop-up book produced by Circle Press. The book is a response to Bartok's opera, but without the characters of Bluebeard and Judith: instead, King directs his attention to the structure of the castle and teases out the meaning behind the rooms that would be revealed as Judith opened their doors. Fisher's poem provides a narrative counterpoint to King's pop-up structures and hints at the idea of knowledge attained through suffering-a theme made even more poignant by the death of King's son, Danny, who passed away while this book was in production. This title is commonly encountered in loose gatherings housed in an acrylic box; this copy, however, is in a binding of quarter black morocco and cloth boards, with blue paper lettering pieces on the upper cover and spine. This binding is not noted in any checklists from the Press, nor is it mentioned in Cathy Courtney's History of the Press. Fine overall. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description Circle Press, [Guildford, 1972. Quarto (29 x 19 cm). Ten loose folders or bifolia, laid into printed stiff card enclosure, the whole contained in a black perspex tray with clear lid. There is a 4cm hairline crack in one corner of the clear lid, otherwise a very fine copy. First edition. One of fifteen artist's proofs, signed by the poet and the artist, in addition to 175 numbered copies (according to the colophon) or 125 numbered copies (according to the press history). Acknowledged as one of the watershed works of the press, BLUEBEARD'S CASTLE was King's first venture into the pop-up format. Based on the opera by Bartok, the visual theme of the book is represented by nine pop-up constructions: the portcullis, the castle and seven secret chambers, with the verse incorporated into the design. The text was printed in Optima type and the internal graphics were silk screened throughout onto Hollingsworth paper. The pop-ups themselves incorporate various reflective materials, colored stocks and non-paper objects. COOKING THE BOOKS 27. Seller Inventory # WRCLIT75813
