Synopsis: Bluenoser Tales is a riveting collection of first-person stories written in the skies over Europe by and about the pilots and airmen of the 352nd Fighter Group and 1st Service Group of the Mighty Eighth Air Force during WWII. The Bluenosers destroyed 776 enemy aircraft, 554 of those in aerial combat, and produced 29 aces, including the top Mustang ace of WWII and the sixth and seventh top-scoring USAF aces of all US wars: Major George Preddy and Colonel John C. Meyer, respectively. Fly with them on these missions as you read the stories, many in their own words, of these young fighter pilots who lived and died to help save the world. This beautiful book of 80+ stories and over 400 wartime photographs is a tribute to their valor--a true history delivered in a way that will never be forgotten. Bluenoser Tales reveals not just the results of battles and the planes they flew but the sinewy, heartwarming, mischievous characters they were. They will remain in your hearts long after the book is closed on all of their lives.
About the Author: Robert H. Powell, editor and co-author, was one of those Bluenosers who flew out of Bodney, England during World War II. While an advertising executive in the early 1980s, Punchy saw the records of what he and his compatriots had accomplished slipping into obscurity and unwilling to allow it to happen, obtained the military records of all the pilots and crew that had served with the 352nd Fighter Group and set out to find out what had happened to them. One by one, by calling authorities in the hometowns of his cohorts, he located over 1100 of the 2000+ people listed and with several of them started the 352nd Fighter Group Association. He and his wife Betty hosted 16 annual reunions of the pilots, crew members and their families before turning over the reins to another of his fellow pilots. Though Punchy will tell you that he is neither a legend nor an ace, he is mistaken. This 87-year-old West, by Gawd, Virginian is indeed an ace in the hearts of his fellow pilots and his success in preserving the history and record of what the 352nd did will forever be lengendary. Punchy and his wife Betty live in Atlanta, Georgia. Marc L. Hamel and Sam Sox, Jr., are faithful friends to the 352nd and other WWII fighter groups and aviation history in general. A regular contributor of articles for several major aviation magazines including Air Classics, Marc is a master interviewer, who has spent countless hours translating the stories of the individuals of the 352nd as a lasting memorial to the Greatest Generation. Sam, photo archivist of the 352nd and other groups, is also a prolific writer and has spent untold hours restoring and enhancing the pictorial legacies of many of those we are losing every day. Marc, on staff with the NC DOT, lives with his son in Raleigh, N.C.; Sam, a retired insurance executive, resides with his wife in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
