About this Item

Pp. (xiv), (240), (iv); (xiii), (240), (iv); (vii), (232) with 176 fine chromolithographic plates (4 are double-page), all finished by hand-coloring and based on the original watercolor paintings by Toni Gurke, wife of the author, M. Gurke. Publisher's original lime green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt and with blind-stamped gilt-decorations on the front covers, all original tissue guards present, sm folio (12 3/4 x 10 inches). A comprehensive review of nearly two hundred flowering cactus species. Many cactus species represented are from Central and South America. This is among the rarest of all German cactus books - the superb full page color plates are among the most vivid and brilliant illustrations of cactus ever published. See also Nissen BBI, 1818 and Stafleu and Cowan II.388 (vol. 5). Published on behalf of the German Cactus Society which was founded and chaired by the senior author, Karl Schumann. This work is exceedingly rare and is often found in an incomplete state - the set offered here is complete and in the original publisher's binding. The original binding show no evidence of fading as is often seen in this work. No ownership marks and no signs of use. Small bumps to two outer corners only and a very faint crease to the cloth along the upper edge of volume 2, the lime green cloth is very bright and clean as is the text and all color plates; a tight copy in almost fine condition.
