About this title:

Synopsis: In the ninth century, southern lowland Maya civilization went into a mysterious decline. Despite the wealth of information that bones could potentially provide towards explaining the collapse, bioarchaeologists have been traditionally unable to study Maya bones because the tropical climate and uninformed excavations have resulted in decomposed, poorly collected samples. But during the last twenty years, new techniques in osteology have yielded finds on Maya diet and health that challenge the accepted ecological model of overpopulation and overcultivation leading to collapse. Fifteen essays on skeltons from a wide range of sites in Mexico and Central America address such subjects as cranial deforamtion, tooth filing, damage caused by sacrificial rites and evidence of nutritional and infectious diseases. What emerges is a picture of regional variation and the importance of local context in order to reconstruct ancinet Maya culture and explain its demise.

Book Description: This volume, which includes an indexed bibliography of the first 150 years of Maya osteology, pulls together for the first time a broad spectrum of bioarchaeologists that reveal remarkable data on Maya genetic relationship, demographic, and diseases.

Book Description Smithsonian Institution Pre, Washington, D.C., 1997. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. xi+290 pages with maps, illustrations, figures, charts, tables, appendices and index. Small quarto (10 1/4" x 7 1/2") bound in original red cloth with black lettering to spine. First edition. In the ninth century, southern lowland Maya civilization began a decline, known as the collapse, that lasted into the Colonial period. Archaeologists have long debated possible causes, with supporters of an ecological model proposing that overpopulation and over cultivation of cropland led to environmental stress, poor nutrition, and widespread disease. Bringing together for the first time current research on Maya bioarchaeology , Bones of the Maya presents fifteen osteological and dental studies of skeletons buried five hundred to twenty-five hundred years ago at a wide range of sites in Mexico and Central America. Contributors address such topics as cranial deformation tooth filing and inlaying, damage caused by sacrificial rites, and bony evidence of nutritional and infectious diseases. Incorporating traditional methods of paleopathology as well as new techniques of DNA and stable isotope analysis, the studies cover a range of time periods, social classes, and political systems. Including an extensive indexed bibliography of publications on Maya osteology form 1839 through 1994, this work not only addresses models of Maya complexity, but also demonstrates how skeletal analysis has contributed substantially to processual archaeology, systems theory and theories of human ecology in efforts to reconstruct ancient Maya culture and explain its demise. Condition: A fine copy in like jacket. Bookseller Inventory # BOOKS001296
