About this Item

Two scarce volumes concerning the Ogontz School for girls, now part of Penn State. 1) The Yearbook for 1931, which consists of 244 pages plus blanks for comments (unmarked) at the rear. 38 copies were produced, one for each of the 35 students and the three administrators. This is copy number 3. The book is octavo, 9-1/4" x 6-1/4", bound in green padded leather with a metal bas-relief of an angel affixed to the front cover (3" x 2-1/4"). Both pastedowns are in moire silk, and the internal hinges have been expertly strengthened (by the printer, not a later addition). The paper is high quality and shows no toning or foxing whatsoever. Each of the 38 recipients is pictured in a beautiful, slightly sepia photograph, all of which are hand-tipped into the book. In all there are 45 photographs, the remainder being group photos of various student activities (sports teams, class play, etc.) The first photograph in the yearbook is that of Abby A. Sutherland, head of the school and the book's dedicatee. She is also the author of the second book in this group. The leather is a bit scuffed at the spine and margins, but this is the only flaw. The signature of the book's owner, Beatrice Reimers, appears on the limitations page. The book is otherwise unmarked. 2) Bound in textured navy flexible cloth. Privately published. 189 pages. A plan of daily devotions for the girls at the Ogontz School. A near fine copy, with only the signature of Beatrice Reimers, Ogontz School, and "Crown" to the front free endpaper. The signatures in both books match, and as we bought these from the family estate, we know these signatures to be genuine. The cloth shows only a hint of wear. Hinges solid; binding square. A near fine copy. These books have been together for 80+ years, and we feel they should remain together. Both are quite scarce. A search of WorldCat turns up only two Ogontz school yearbooks, neither for this year, and no copies of the prayer book or the yearbook are currently in the internet marketplace. Beatrice Reimers married Charles McLaughlin of Omaha; her brother-in-law was the renowned Dr. Paul Burgess, a missionary and later book publisher whose work in Guatemala is still highly regarded.
