It was erected 1825–27, to designs of a little-known architect, Ebenezer Perry (died 1850), who practiced in London. The bridge is in two parts separated by an island. The origin of the name is uncertain, although it has been suggested that it originated about 1650 after a tenant of Bacon's study. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description Printed at the Clarendon Press by Samuel Collingwood & Co, Oxford, 1823. 254 x 152 mm. (10 x 6"). [656] pp. Contemporary burgundy straight-grain morocco blind-stamped in cathedral style, covers with central panel of an altar with rose window and gothic ownership lettering in gilt ("Eatington Chapel 1826"), the panel within a floral frame of gothic motif; wide raised bands, spine panels each blindstamped with two gothic windows, gilt titling, gilt-rolled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edge gilt. WITH A LARGE FORE-EDGE PAINTING SHOWING LINCOLN FROM THE RIVER WITHAM. Griffiths 1823/8. Spine with a hint of sunning, joints and corners slightly worn (front joint perhaps getting ready to crack), final two leaves with faint dampstain at upper right (small, insignificant dampstain at top of some other leaves), but a very presentable copy, the binding solid and not at all unattractive, the text unusually bright and quite fresh, and the painting entirely as it should be. This "Great Primer Octavo" edition of the "Book of Common Prayer" offers a large canvas for our fore-edge painter, and the skillful artist has taken advantage of the opportunity, providing us with a panoramic view of the cathedral city of Lincoln--an appropriate subject to accompany the religious content here and our cathedral-style binding. The River Witham runs along the foreground of the scene, with barges on the water, a horse and driver on the towpath, and fishermen on the banks. An inn stands nearby, and the city rises on the hill behind, with the majestic cathedral surmounting the scene at upper right. The painting, with its muted colors, is suffused with tranquility, and the very skillful artist has given us considerable detail and depth. This service book was apparently presented to the Eatington (now Ettington) Chapel in Warwickshire, about five miles southwest of Stratford-upon-Avon. One of the several editions in various formats printed in Oxford that year, the first year to incorporate the statement of unification of the Churches of England and Ireland on the title-leaves of the Prayer Book.
