About this Item

Lamm’s 1928 edition of M. Mussorgsky’s "Boris Godunov." Large 4to. pp. XXIX, [3], 452. Includes piano and vocal scores, a mounted photo plate of Mussorgsky (preceding p.1) and two title pages (in Russian and German respectively). Another title (or rather a front wrap) is printed with gilt letters on stiff paper and precedes the two main title pages. The preface and vocal score are printed in both Russian and German. Bound in dark green publisher’s cloth with gilt title on the front cover. This volume is professionally re-cased in its original binding. Some spots of rubbing are present to the extremities; the front upper corner tip is lightly bumped. Interior pages are clean with mild age-toning in the margins and an occasional light penciled notation. A small hand signature in ink is present on the stiff paper title wrap. Modeste Mussorgsky’s masterpiece opera, "Boris Godunov," is based on Alexander Pushkin’s play about the Russian Tsar of that name (ruled 1598-1605) and his enemy the False Dmitriy. The opera (first printed in 1874) exists in several renditions and re-workings. In 1928 the Russian State Publishing House and editor Pavel Lamm started to issue new editions of Mussorgsky’s works. Lamm’s edition of "Boris Gudonov" (the first publication in the series) utilizes variant readings of the opera from both the 1868-70 manuscripts and from the first printed edition of 1874. Some lost scenes are also restored creating a very long rendition of the opera. The Russian/German and English/French versions were published in association with Oxford University Press. This is the Russian/German version. "Nach den Manuskripten des Autors erneut, durchgearbeitet und mit bisher noch nicht veröffentlichten Bildern, Szenen, Fragmenten und Varianten ergänzt von Paul Lamm. Deutsche Textubersetzung von Max Hube.". Bookseller Inventory # 000522
