"This book examines the history of mining management in the American West. Livermore, educated at Harvard and MIT, spent the years from 1903-1911 at mines in the San Juan Mountains -- his father held the controlling interest in the Smuggler-Union mine near Telluride, Colorado. The first decade of the 20th century was marked by labor unrest and union warfare in the western mining camps, and Livermore describes it in detail. Subsequently, he was in Canada helping to develop mining in the Cobalt area, which later on turned out to be a very rich bonanza." from the jacket flap.
