About this Item
Oblong folio (266 x 365mm). 29 Original brilliantly colored botanical drawings in watercolour and gouache by Ethel Dixie., on thick card, mounted on guards, each specimen identified by its Linnean name (two detached from linen guards, a third slightly smaller and inserted). Each flower is labeled. Some protected by worn tissue guards. Brown morocco gilt (slightly scuffed, light shelfwear). Fine brilliantly coloured drawings: the species represented are Disa (5 drawings); Protea (2); Gladiolus (5); Erica (5); and one each of the Crassula; Ixia: Moroea; Anemone; Lachenalia; Babiana; Oxalis; Sparaxis; Amaryllis; Agapanthus; Nerine and Watsonia. Published examples of the artist's work are included in R. Marloth's "Flowers of South Africa (1913-1932) and her work is also reproduced in Kennedy's "Catalogue of Pictures in the African Museum". Dixie was a self-taught South African botanical artist. She worked as a lecturer at the Cape Town School of Art and today her work can be found in the Brenthurst Library in Johannesburg, the Carnegie Library archives at the University of Stellenbosch, Museum Africa in Johannesburg, National Botanical Institutes in Cape Town and Pretoria.
