About this Item

First Impression of the UK edition. 8vo: [10],243,[1]pp. Publisher's moss-green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, white typographic dust jacket, printed in moss-green and priced 18s. Fine (save for dust-soiled top edge), bright, tight unread copy, in an about Fine jacket with slight toning to spine panel's white lettering and a single short closed tear. Scarce thus. For more than half a century, as a leading New Yorker magazine staff writer, Mitchell wrote stories and sketches about the oddballs and misfits on the fringes of society-gypsies, bums, street preachers, strippers, clammers, oystermen-he met while exploring Harlem, Greenwich Village, the Bowery, and New York harbor. This, Mitchell's fourth collection, comprises six articles centered on the waters around New York and the people who live and work nearby. The book's most famous story, "Up in the Old Hotel," features a waterfront restaurant, Sloppy Louie's, near the Fulton Fish Market, and its proprietor, Louie Morino, who explores with Mitchell the four abandoned floors above the restaurant, former site of the Fulton Ferry Hotel. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Bookseller Inventory # BB0890
