About this title

Synopsis:

Readers learn how one child can make a difference when a young boy saves a village by plugging a hole in a dike with his finger.

From Booklist:

Prepare to be whisked away to foreign lands in the Folktales from around the World series. Each title presents a story native to a particular country or continent through simple text (which begins with “Once upon a time” or “Many years ago”) and illustrations that stylistically represent the culture. The Boy at the Dike tells of a lad named Peter who kept back “the angry waters of the sea” in Holland by plugging a hole in a dike with his finger. A world map, with the featured country highlighted and labeled, appears at the end of each entry along with a one-page afterword that explains common characteristics of folktales, from the prevalence of magical elements to their moralistic nature, as well as basic country facts. A nice introduction to the oral storytelling tradition for both classroom settings and one-on-one sharing. Grades K-3. --Ann Kelley
