Olive green cloth with illustration in pink, green and gilt on front cover and additional detailing on spine. Maps on endpapers. Chromolithograph frontispiece. xvi, 531pages + 4 pgs with publisher catalog: "Interesting Books for Boys." Profuse b & w illustrations. ~ Book is clean and in uite nice, near fine condition, with light rubbing along bottom edges; paper is partly torn at juncture of front pastedown and free endpaper, but binding is still very much intact and secure; toning to text block; interior pages clean and unmarked. Previous owner name and date written in meticulous old-fashion script on front flyleaf: "Albert F.Blakeslee, Dec. 25, '91." ~~ Knox (1835-1896) was a respected journalist and author best known for his output as a travel writer. After completing his own world travels, he produced the 20+ volumes of the "Boy Travellers" series of travelogue stories for boys, each volume addressing a different region. These books are remarkable for their meticulous factual, educational and cultural detail. In this volume, the two young travelers, Frank Bassett and Fred Bronson, accompanied by Frank's mother and sister and their mentor Doctor Bronson, travel through Germany, the Netherlands, and the three Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Many of the quaint and charming illustrations were borrowed from other Harper publications such as Harper's Monthly. The four different endpaper maps show the travel routes for each of the countries.
