Book Description A.L Bancroft and Company, San Francisco, 1879. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Brown cloth with gilt image and title on front cover and spine; 424pp. This collection was "Published and sold for the benefit of the "Youths' Directory," of San Francisco, a benevolent institution for friendless boys." The introduction includes a treatise on the need to help those less fortunate individuals in our society and describes the Youths' Directory which was opened in SF in November, 1874 and their work to take care of destitute boys. It also includes an appeal to the readers of the book to financially support the Youths' Directory in San Francisco. "The smallest offerings will be thankfully received, and let those who cannot make such offerings, purchase at least one copy of the book, and in that way participate in the good work." This volume bears a former owner's name in ink: "J.K. Willoughby / Yolo County / 1888." A nice California book related to early social services provided by an organization in that state. Front fly leaf is creased; some splitting at the margin of the front and back cover end papers; o/w a clean, solid book in VG to VG+ condition. [B10-66]. Bookseller Inventory # 000199
