About this title

Synopsis:

Jack, a hungry rabbit, braves untold dangers and the warnings of his farmyard friends to feast on the crisp, green cabbages in the farmer's garden.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-K-- Jack, a hungry rabbit, plans to visit the big cabbage patch at dusk, but all of his friends tell him about a scary, enormous creature that guards the field. Jack just twitches his ears, paws, or whiskers at the warnings and persuades them to follow him. When they arrive at the patch, Jack discovers that the monster is a scarecrow, so he fearlessly feasts on crisp cabbages. Full-page, boldly colored impressionistic paintings of the rabbit's encounters face a page of text with a small block illustration of the intervening action. The muted, darker shades suit the twilight time frame as the story progesses. Although the ending is rather abrupt, the simplicity, repetition, and suspense make this a good choice for reading aloud. --Caroline Parr, Central Rappahannock Regional Library, Fredericksburg, VA
