Aside from some discoloration at the very edges, the boards are well preserved and retain their blue color. Little to no shelf wear. Previous owner's have left their signatures in ink on the front and rear pastedowns. Slight bumping and scuffing on the corners, but nothing major. The lettering on the spine is clean and legible. The text block is bright, clean, and complete. The binding is sound. Grantland Rice was an American sportswriter from the early 20th century who was known for his beautiful prose. His writing served to elevate certain figures, like Jack Dempsey, Babe Ruth, and Knute Rockne, to heroic status in the eyes of the average reader. One of his most famous pieces labelled the backfield of the 1924 Notre Dame football team the "Four Horsemen" and making them popular figures. He was famously mocked by Hunter S. Thompson in his classic article "Fear and Loathing at the Super Bowl" in 1973. He will be familiar to sports and pop culture fans as the namesake of Grantland, the website run by Bill Simmons from 2011 to 2015. This collection of poetry will be of interest to fans of Rice, sports fans in general, and anybody interested in 20th Century American history. It would make a fine addition to anybody's bookshelf.
