first and only edition and printing (not stated); mostly in Danish, also in German, Icelandic; 2 vols.; from the library of the linguist Glenn Gilbert, two small spots on lower spine where a piece of masking tape was removed; first volume is cut, second volume mostly uncut, binding starting to loosen in vol. 1 between pp. 304 and 305, some sunning, else clean, square, and little used, rated Near Fine; sensational letters from the Danish genius who corresponded with the Grimm Brothers, among many others, a push--pull relationship which accelerated and improved the Grimms' Deutsche Grammatik, the first comparative grammar of the Germanic languages; the two volumes of letters would interest collectors of fine books on the history of linguistics, the leavening roll of Denmark in 19th century linguistics, the beginnings of the comparative method, and the elaboration of the linguistics paradigm launched by Sir William Jones in his Anniversary Discourse in Calcutta in 1776; soft covers are gray/green with black and red lettering; 4to - 9 7/8 inches high, xiii + 457 (vol. 1) and ix + 402 (vol. 2) numbered pages.
