About this Item

Copyright page states first edition. First edition, second state (with multiple dates on copyright page). Absolutely gorgeous copy in like dust jacket with an envelope affixed to the rear fixed endpaper containing a nice letter from the author. PON and date on front free endpaper and owners embossed seal on front flyleaf. The previous owner apparently corresponded with the author numerous times, as several books have similar letters laid in. A beautiful copy of a scarce book. Eudora Alice Welty (1909 - 2001) was known for her short stories and novels about the South. Her novel The Optimist's Daughter won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among many other words, including the Order of the South. She was the first living author to have her works published by the Library of America. Her house in Jackson, Mississippi is a National Historic Landmark. During the Depression, she collected stories, conducted interviews and took photographs of daily life in Mississippi while working for the Works Progress Administration as a publicity agent -- work that would later inform her writing on the South. She was published prolifically in magazines beginning in 1936, when her story "The Death of a Traveling Salesman" appeared in the literary magazine Manuscript (making this collection, which includes many of her magazine appearances, especially helpful to scholarly research). Her photographs depicting the Great Depression have been collected in several books, including the very scarce, Twenty Photographs, featuring photos printed from her original negatives.
