About this Item

[HOOD, Samuel]. A Brief Account of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick; with Biographical Notices of Some of the Members, and Extracts from the Minutes. Phila.: Prepared and Published by the Order of the Hibernian Society, 1844. 112pp. Frontis. Orig. cloth. Cloth rubbed, speckled, spine ends expertly repaired, light scattered foxing, else very good. Sabin 32802. Shaw & Shoemaker 443141. Scarce, no auction records since 1975; Worldcat lists 30 copies. Published by the Hibernian Society, which regarded itself as the successor to the Society of Friendly Sons, this work is based on the minute book of the Friendly Sons kept from 1771 until 1798. Its members included John Dickinson, Robert Morris, George Washington, Anthony Wayne, and Commodore Barry, among other prominent men of the Revolutionary era. Published in 1844, the year of violent anti- Irish riots in Philadelphia between May and July, this work is a strong statement of the role the Irish played in the American Revolution and in forming the nation. Eliza is mentioned in her husband's biography in the History of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and of the Hibernian Society. by John Hugh Campbell. Bookseller Inventory # 62617
