About this Item

[OLDMIXON, John]. British Empire in America, Containing the History of the Discovery, Settlement, Progress and Present State of All the British Colonies, On the Continent and Islands of America. With Curious Maps of the Several Places, Done from the Newest Surveys. By Herman Moll, Geographer. London. 1708. Two volumes. xxxviii,412pp. plus an advertisement page and an errata page (on both sides of the same leaf) and five folding maps; [2],382,[34]pp. plus three folding maps. Contemporary paneled calf, tooled in blind, expertly rebacked in matching calf, raised bands, leather spine labels. Quite clean and neat internally, a very good set. HOWES O61. SABIN 57156. JCB (III)1:117. HANDLER 19. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 708/95. LANDE 690. TPL 38. KRESS 2597. RICH, p.64 (later ed). Oldmixon's name is signed to the dedication of this first edition only, and Sabin suggests authorship should be attributed to Moll, who produced the maps. In many other respects the editions are different. There is much material on Pennsylvania that is contained in the first and not the second, "apparently derived from personal communication with William Penn" (JCB). The British possessions in North America are described in the first volume, while those in the West Indies are described in the second. The maps depict North America; New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania; Virginia and Maryland; Carolina; Barbados; St. Christopher's; and Jamaica, among others.
