Folio, 32 by 23 cm. With 20 hand-colored portrait plates of leading actors of the day, and with each portrait accompanied by a biography and appreciation of varying length, with a few just a page or two, and longer treatments given to Kean, Siddons, Knight and Young. The portraits show the actors in roles famously associated with them, such as Kean as Richard III and Mrs. Siddons as Lady Macbeth. The portraits, all especially richly colored and finely detailed, are after paintings by others. The original paintings are by Harlowe, Clint, Sharp, Waldeck, and de Wilde. Abbey Life 418. In addition to the book itself, there is included a letter to the actor Richard Jones from Daniel Terry about arranging for Jones' portrait to be in a Berthoud collection (possibly a second installment) and seeking biographical information. However, nothing ever came of it, for Jones was not included in this or any later work. Full crushed morocco binding by R. W. Smith. All edges gilt. Light wear. Bookseller Inventory #
